Trailer Registration and Finance: What Lenders Require
Registration and finance are separate systems, but lenders care about both. Here's how they fit together when you buy a trailer on finance.
Why lenders want the VIN or serial number
A lender's security over your trailer is registered on the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) against its VIN or serial number. Without a reliable identifier, the lender can't properly register its interest, so a clear VIN or serial number is essential for finance.
Registration vs the PPSR
Registration (rego) is handled by your state or territory and lets the trailer be used on public roads. The PPSR is a national register of security interests. Finance does not show on your rego papers; it shows on the PPSR. That's why a trailer can be registered in a seller's name while still having money owing on it.

Most trailers used on public roads must be registered, and lenders generally expect them to be, or to be registered after purchase. For a dealer sale, the dealer usually handles registration. For a private sale, you'll arrange the transfer with your state transport authority after settlement.
Unregistered trailers
Some trailers are not registered, such as certain farm trailers or equipment that never goes on public roads. These can still be financed by some lenders, but you'll need clear identification such as a serial number, proof of ownership and a fair-value price. A smaller pool of lenders may be willing.
Buying interstate
Buying a trailer from another state is common. Finance works the same way, because the PPSR is national. The difference is registration: you'll usually need to register the trailer in your home state, which may involve an inspection. Factor in transport and rego costs when budgeting.
Heavy vehicles: heavy trailers may be registered through state systems with national heavy vehicle rules also applying. Check what applies to your trailer type before you buy.
