Private Sale Trailer Finance: How to Make It Work
Buying privately can get you a better price, but lenders treat private sales more carefully than dealer purchases. Here's what they check and how to keep the process smooth.
Can you finance a privately sold trailer?
Yes. Many lenders fund private sales, for both personal and business buyers. Fewer lenders do private sales than dealer sales, and those that do have extra steps, because there's no dealer verifying the trailer and handling the paperwork.
What the lender will want to see
- A tax invoice or private sale agreement showing the seller's details, the price and the trailer's VIN or serial number.
- Proof the seller owns it. Registration papers in the seller's name, plus their ID.
- A clear PPSR search. The lender checks the Personal Property Securities Register for any finance already registered against the trailer.
- Photos or an inspection, especially for higher-value or older trailers, so the lender knows the trailer exists and is in the condition described.
- The seller's bank details, because the lender usually pays the seller directly.

If a seller still owes money on a trailer and it's registered on the PPSR, the old lender may be able to repossess it from you, even if you paid in full. Always run a PPSR search using the VIN or serial number before handing over any money. It's quick and inexpensive, and it also flags trailers reported stolen or written off.
If the trailer does have money owing, the sale can still go ahead safely. The seller gets a payout letter from their lender, and your lender pays that amount directly to the old lender, with the balance going to the seller. The old security interest is then removed.
Tip: agree with the seller up front that payment will come from your lender, not from you, and that it can take a few business days after approval. Sellers who understand this are much easier to deal with.
Business buyers and GST
Most private sellers aren't registered for GST, so there's usually no GST in the price and nothing to claim back. If you're buying from a business that is GST-registered, ask for a tax invoice so you can claim it.
